Broil Element Replacement

If your oven's broiler function has given you trouble, it may be time for a broil element replacement. It's a quick and simple process if you have the right replacement part.

What is a Broil Element?

Broiler element replacements are used on “Electric Ovens” or “Dual-Fuel Ovens” with electric oven cavity. Your broil element resides at the top of your oven. It's a reverse grill, exposing your food to very high eat from above instead of beneath. You can cook thin cuts of meat or vegetables quickly, just like on a grill. While most broiler units are on the top of your oven, some ovens have a separate broiler compartment below.

Broiler units typically only have two settings: on and off. If your oven gives you options, experiment to figure out what works for you. It's a great way to cook things quickly, within approximately 5 to 10 minutes.

Broilers cook the surface of the meat very quickly, but if you need to cook a thicker cut more thoroughly, or your food isn't ready after broiling, you can finish it off in the oven.

How to Replace Broil Elements

If you want to learn how to replace the broil element, make sure you first purchase a high-quality broil elements replacement part to ensure it will fit and work properly. In some cases, you may see visible damage to your broil element while in other cases, it may simply stop heating without warning.

The broil heating element replacement is easy, should only take about 15 minutes, and requires a nut driver set, pliers, and work gloves. Your oven needs to be turned off and cool. Unplug the oven from the power source and wait for it to cool before starting the replacement process.

Once you're ready, you can take out the broil element by first removing the oven racks to give you more space. Unscrew the supports that hold the broil element in place. Pull the broiler forward to expose the heating element wires. Disconnect these wires and ensure they don't fall back behind the oven.

It should now be easy to remove the broil element from the oven. Attach the new one to the wires, screw it into place, and restore power to the oven to make sure it still works.

There are many different brands of oven broiler element replacements including Electrolux, Maytag, KitchenAid, Kenmore, Frigidaire, Whirlpool, Jenn-Air, and much more. Kenmore Broil Elements typically uses GE, Frigidaire or Whirlpool branded elements. Prices range from $50 to $100 or more, depending on the brand, size, and much more.

A Frigidaire broil element replacement is the same process as detailed above. However, if the wires fall behind the oven where you cannot reach them to reconnect them to the replacement element, you may need to unscrew the back panel to access them.

A Kenmore broil element replacement is also similar, but you may need to unscrew and remove the oven sensor after removing the oven racks, before removing the broil element to get it out of the way.
